Why BetterGrow Hydro chose ShipX over Shopify’s native shipping and other shipping apps
About BetterGrow Hydro

"We started out primarily selling hydroponic supplies and equipment for indoor gardening, but over the years we’ve grown to include outdoor gardening and farming, as well as mushroom cultivation."

The catalogue has grown alongside the business, and it now spans an unusually wide range: products as small as a coin sit next to items that have to ship on a pallet. BetterGrow Hydro recently migrated the store from Magento to Shopify to support further growth, which meant shipping had to be rebuilt rather than carried over as-is.
The Challenge
Shopify's native shipping settings couldn't keep up with a catalogue this wide. Four problems compounded, and each one maps directly to a rule the team would later build in ShipX:
- No way to price shipping on real package size and weight: A small accessory and a bulky, irregularly shaped item were quoted using the same flat logic, even though they cost completely different amounts to box and ship.
- Heavy and freight-class orders had to be caught manually: Nothing in native settings could look at a cart's total weight and decide on its own that an order needed to ship by truck instead of standard ground.
- Bundled free shipping wasn’t possible: BetterGrow Hydro sells kits that ship free, plus optional accessories that should also ship free, but only when bought alongside the kit. Shopify could tag a product to ship free on its own, but not conditionally, based on what else was in the cart.
- No accurate flat rates or live carriers at the product level: Shopify’s built-in options only support fixed rates or rates based on order value, not rates that reflect what a specific product actually costs to ship, whether that’s a flat average or a live carrier quote.
Getting shipping wrong cost the business in both directions:
- Underpriced estimates meant absorbing the loss or asking the customer for more money after the order came in
- Overpriced estimates meant customers abandoning their cart, usually without saying why.
"We can't just charge fixed rates, we can't charge based on the dollar amount. We really need to be able to offer our customers something close to what the actual charge is by the carrier."
~ David, BetterGrow Hydro
Before ShipX, the team tried several other Shopify apps and evaluated Calcurate directly. Calcurate looked complicated, and without a clear sense of monthly cost, the team was wary of investing setup time only to find the pricing became expensive later. None of the alternatives covered the range of scenarios BetterGrow Hydro needed.
The Solution
BetterGrow Hydro configured 12 shipping rules in ShipX, built around four core rule types that, between them, cover most of the catalogue.
- AI packaging and rotational package for carrier rates: An AI packaging algorithm and rotational packaging logic determine how items are boxed, so carrier rates are calculated against realistic package dimensions and weight instead of a flat per-item estimate.
- Automatic freight versus ground routing: Orders with a cart weight of 500lb or more are automatically routed to truck-only freight shipping instead of standard ground.
- Conditional free shipping on kits and accessories: Kits ship free, and accessories only ship free when added alongside the kit they belong to, not on their own, using product SKU-based rules.
- Fixed-rate shipping on specific products: Select items ship at a flat rate nationwide (based on an average cost the team worked out for East Coast and West Coast delivery), or at live carrier rates, using custom metafields set on the product.
"I was actually surprised there was a way to do this in ShipX, because I thought we were going to be stuck."

The Results
What the team can point to with more confidence:
- Fewer shipping losses: Far fewer situations where BetterGrow Hydro had to eat a shipping cost or go back to a customer to ask for more money after the order came in.
- More accurate checkout estimates: Shipping quotes now reflect what orders actually cost to ship, across a much wider range of product sizes and weights than before.
- Support that knows their setup: David called out ShipX's support team directly for consistently fast, well-informed responses.
Looking Ahead
BetterGrow Hydro’s catalogue will likely keep growing the way it has for over two decades, from hydroponics into whatever category comes next. Shipping that scales with a catalogue like that, from a coin-sized accessory to a pallet, is what makes that kind of expansion possible without losing margin along the way.
