How a UK Kids’ Electric Bike Brand Stopped Losing Margin on Shipping With ShipX
About Kubbi
Kubbi is a UK-based children’s electric vehicle brand that sells electric dirt bikes, scooters, and quads for ages 3 to 18+.
Paul started Kubbi because he saw a gap in the UK and Ireland market. Most competitors selling kid’s electric vehicles were based in China, shipping in from overseas with little room for local support. Paul built Kubbi as a British company instead, stocking spare parts, backing every bike with UK-based support, and designing in safety features like built-in parental speed limiters.
“We started as a UK company, and we offer better safety features and better customer service. We also stock all the spare parts for our customers, so we can give our end customers a much better experience when purchasing from us.”
~ Paul, Founder, Kubbi
The mission comes through on the brand’s own About Us page too: Kubbi started with a simple idea, get kids off the sofa and back outside. Today the brand has sold more than 15,000 bikes to UK parents and holds a 4.9/5 rating across hundreds of verified reviews.
The Challenge
Kubbi’s catalogue spans a wide range, from a lightweight electric scooter to a full-size teen dirt bike. Before ShipX, Kubbi’s existing shipping setup couldn’t easily combine product size and postcode-level pricing, so most customers saw roughly the same rate regardless of what they’d ordered or where in the UK they lived.
This created two compounding problems:
- A spare part and full-size quad don’t cost the same to ship, but there was no straightforward way to charge differently based on size.
- Shipping costs aren’t flat across the UK: Scotland and other harder-to-reach areas genuinely cost more to deliver to, yet customers everywhere were paying the same rate. Kubbi was either overcharging customers in cheaper zones or absorbing the extra cost everywhere else.
"It was a bit of a mess because we have different products in different sizes. We needed a platform that allowed us to charge different shipping rates. There are also different areas within the UK; shipping to places such as Scotland can be more expensive, so we needed to charge customers different rates based on their location."

That’s what brought ShipX into the picture.
The Solution
Paul found ShipX through the Shopify App Store and reached out directly to get set up. Rather than leaving Kubbi to configure a complex rules engine alone, the ShipX team built the entire structure with him.
The setup that came out of that process runs on two variables at once. Product size determines the rate tier: five separate rate structures cover everything from small spare parts and helmets up to the heaviest quads. Customer location determines the zone: rules now cover more than 230 UK postcode areas, from mainland England and Wales through the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Wight, and the offshore islands.
Between those two variables, Kubbi’s products are matched to three different carrier services, a standard small-parcel carrier for spare parts and helmets, a signature courier for mid-size bikes, and two-person, white glove delivery for the heaviest items.

The Result
Here’s what Kubbi achieved with ShipX:
But the number that matters most to Paul is simpler: shipping stopped being a cost he was guessing at.
“It’s working perfectly. It’s amazing. It allows us to charge customers the correct prices in different parts of the country. This can help improve our conversion rate because we can offer free shipping in areas where shipping does not cost us as much, and for locations where shipping costs more, we can charge an appropriate rate. It has worked very well for us, and it has added profit to our balance sheet.”

Paul was unequivocal when asked if he’d recommend ShipX to other merchants: by far the best shipping app he’s used, and one he now recommends to everybody.
Paul’s Advice for Other Merchants
Asked what he’d tell other Shopify merchants shipping bulky items, Paul’s advice was direct: know your actual shipping costs before you set your rates.
“You need to understand your shipping cost properly. When speaking with shipping companies, carefully examine how much they charge for different locations. You also need to pay attention to the small print in shipping contracts. Remote locations, hard-to-reach areas, and places far from cities can have much higher shipping fees. With Shopify alone, I think you may only be able to charge one general price. With ShipX, you can charge different prices based on the customer's postcode, so you charge the correct shipping price for each location. If you don't properly understand what you're charging, you can end up losing a significant amount of your net profit."

Looking Ahead
For a brand built on the idea of getting kids outdoors, getting the logistics right behind the scenes matters more than it might seem. Every bike, scooter, and quad still has to physically get from Kubbi’s warehouse to a doorstep, at the right price, before any of that adventure can start.
If your store ships a wide range of product sizes across regions with genuinely different delivery costs, Kubbi’s setup is a useful blueprint: price by product, price by location, and stop guessing.
